Wheel Chair Ramp Choices, Styles and Varieties
Threshold Ramps
Threshold ramps are usually constructed of high quality, light-weight anodized aluminum. However, there are
other types available made with solid rubber. These light-weight, durable, free-standing ramps are designed
to provide easy access for doorways, sliding glass doors and raised landings. The ramp simply sits against
the doorsill or threshold to provide a smooth transition to/from the ground, patio or deck. These ramps are
ideal for accommodating manual wheelchairs, scooters, power chairs, walkers and cane users. While designed
for everyday use, these are easily removed and stored because of their small size and weight.
Modular Ramps Modular ramps are designed to
address the accessibility needs of the residential and light commercial market. This type of ramp is an
excellent choice for when accessibility needs extend beyond the scope of a portable ramp. These systems
can be used for temporary access as well as longer term needs. Modular ramp systems use less hardware, require no
pre-assembly and are extremely easy to install compared to wood and concrete construction. Easy assembly
means easy dis-assembly are requirements dictate. These are perfect for manual wheelchairs, scooters, power
chairs, walkers and other mobility access needs.
Solid Path Ramps
Solid path ramps provide a long-term access solution for mobility devices and in a variety of environments.
Designed for strength and safety, solid path ramps provide an excellent alternative to costly wooden ramps.
When mobility needs extend beyond the scope of a conventional portable ramp, this ramp is your answer.
Although not as easily transported as a portable ramp, this ramp can be moved and easily relocated as needs
change. Designed for repeated, everyday use in all weather conditions, these solid path ramps provide extra
heavy duty and extra wide access for scooters, manual wheelchairs, power chairs, walkers, canes and crutches.
Some come with raised traction ridges, some with non-skid metal surfaces with holes for drainage.
Van Ramps Van ramps are typically permanently
installed into the floor of a van for either side or rear door accessibility. It is easily installed and
requires little assembly. Once installed, van ramps are very easy to use. Typically, van ramps store
vertically or folding inward upon itself. Most of these leave adequate room for access through the door
openings in which they are installed. Some extend and retract manually while some models are
spring-assisted. Recently, electric versions have appeared on the market. These models really simplify
extension and retraction of the ramp.
Track Ramps
Track ramps are designed for manual and power wheelchairs. Most track tramps have telescopic channels that
extend to be used on steps, for vans, curbs or other moderate elevation changes. For storage, simply pick up
each rail and collapse. These ramps are lightweight and store easily. Track ramps offer the easiest
transport and storage due to their light weight and small footprint when collapsed.
Portable Ramps
Single Fold Ramps
Single-fold ramps provide an economical solution for temporary accessibility needs. These ramps are very easy
to use and install. All you need to do is unfold, place over obstruction and roll with your manual
wheelchair, scooter or power chair. Just fold the ramp in half when you don’t need it. Usually equipped
with built-in handles, these are easy to carry and make storage simple and effortless. These are great for
everyday use. Single fold ramps are available in a variety of sizes, makes, and materials. Some simply
fold apart to create a single-piece wheel chair ramp. Others are made of two separate pieces and are held
together with a hinge-pin. Use this as a single piece ramp or separate the pieces for wider
applications.
Multi-Fold Ramps
Multi-fold ramps provide a portable solution for ease of use at home or while travelling. These are
commercial quality and will cost a great deal more than single-fold models. However, these multi-fold ramps
are able to handle more variety and larger elevation changes. Multi-fold ramps offer width and length-wise
folding options for ease in transportation. Hinge designs also allow for two-piece mobility in some
models. With the ability to change the design, these ramps offer the length and strength required for
scooters & all wheelchair types to bridge the gap over steps, curbs and raised
landings.
